BERNARD ALLISON
Kentucky Fried Blues
Ruf Records

Being the son of the late legendary Chicago blues artist Luther Allison give you automatic musical credentials. Not that Bernard Allison needs any help making his music stand on it´s own. The 37 year-old Allison, introduced as “the next generation of the blues”, has followed admirably in his Father´s footsteps, growing up learning the guitar by slowing down his dad´s LP´s and listening to every single note. He continues to offer his own creative brand of blues music that remains blessed by the purists, yet offers something just a bit more his own style.

Ruf Records has released Bernard Allison's “Kentucky Fried Blues”, a live recording that showcases the younger Allison´s chops on a number of blues standards and originals. While the disc features only seven tracks, every note sears from the muscle of Allison´s six string Gibson, beginning from the instrumental introduction “Buzz Me” right to the very final note of Johnny Winter´s “Good Time Woman”. Allison and his band really smoke on their cover of Buddy Guy´s “Leave My Girl Alone”, offering a much looser version than Stevie Ray Vaughan´s take on the song from “In Step”. Overall, Allison and his bandmates (Jeff Hayes-Bass, Richard Martinez-Trombone, Trevor Newman-Trumpet, Craig Panosh-Drums, and Mike Vlahakis-Keyboards) sound comfortable in a live setting, and do a great job at changing tempos and keeping things interesting from start to finish.

Bernard Allison has released some terrific material over the past few years, and “Kentucky Fried Blues” is the perfect compliment to that work. Armed by a talented band, a strong, soulful voice, and some of the best guitar chops around, Allison and company continues to cook up the blues just the way you like them.
